Like smoke from a bone-fire’s embers,
Black clouds rise from the sunset;
Winds descend like deep, cosmic sighs
Onto sleeping homes beneath withered boughs.
Along the streets, trees shake and shiver,
Leaves flee in a rasping dance on the road
From the chill grip of Winter’s fingers,
Crumbling like bones in the cold earth.
There is a wraith that roams the world,
Risen from Summer’s leaf-wreathed tomb,
It stalks the weald and streets, moaning,
Howling in a hollow voice that freezes.
It is the pale, skull-face of the lonely moon,
The phantom breeze that shakes the candle,
The knock upon the door at the witching hour;
It is the shiver upon spines in the dead of night.
You, black wind, haunter in the darkness
Encircling my hearth, leave my home be,
For I have not the joy you wish to shake;
My ribs are cold and bare as an iron lanthorn.
